Snack competition is tightening, but one remains strong: 'Finland is a good yogurt country,' says the director

Yogurt consumption in Finland remains strong, despite increasing competition from other snack products.

In Finland, yogurt consumption has stabilized at over 100 million kilograms per year, averaging more than 19 kilograms per person. Although it has decreased from peak years, the per capita consumption has remained steady for the past decade. While the market has seen a significant fall in milk consumption, the demand for other snack products has surged, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.

The yogurt market faces increasing competition as other snack types gain popularity. According to Juhani Haara, a sales manager at S-Group, while plant-based and quark products have seen noticeably stronger growth compared to yogurt, sales of yogurt have also increased by over ten percent between 2019 and 2025. This sustained demand suggests that yogurt still holds a special place in Finnish diets, supported by its ease of use and rapid consumption, which consumers appreciate.

The findings point to a complex landscape where traditional yogurt continues to thrive amid changing preferences towards convenience and variety in snacks. This evolution in the Finnish snack market highlights the importance of adaptation and finding niches within established product categories, as yogurt producers seek to maintain their foothold in an evolving competitive environment.
