Lover 'biggest train improvement in 12 years' - but Vy fears there may be delays
'Vy' announces significant improvements to the train schedule, promising more departures and better service, albeit with some warnings of potential delays.
The Norwegian railway directorate has promised the most significant improvement to the train system in 12 years, assuring passengers in Eastern Norway of increased departures and a more reliable service. This changes come with the integration of express trains into regular routes, aiming to alleviate crowding and improve punctuality on the routes. Marit RΓΈnning, the railway director, communicated these changes at a press briefing, highlighting the need for a comprehensive reshuffling of the train schedule due to capacity issues, particularly through the Oslo tunnel which is currently operating at full capacity.
Controversies have arisen as Vy, the operating company, proposed a different solution for the train scheduling, leading to heated discussions and professional disagreements within the agency. The final plan will reduce the number of trains traveling from Oslo S to Gardermoen, decreasing from one train per hour to none, while passengers from Drammen will benefit from increased train services. This shakeup in scheduling reflects a strategic attempt to manage overcrowding and enhance overall train service in the region.
Despite the positive outlook from the directorate, officials are already warning that passengers may experience delays, highlighting a continuing concern over operational reliability amidst the changes. The new schedule is set to take effect in December, and it remains to be seen how the adjustments will play out in practical terms, particularly as the railway infrastructure continues to face capacity constraints on its busiest routes.
