Convicted individuals go free because psychiatric care is full

Dozens of individuals who have been sentenced to psychiatric care in Sweden are currently at large due to overcrowded clinics.

In Sweden, more than twenty individuals who have been sentenced to forensic psychiatric care are free, as the clinics providing this treatment are overcapacity. Mikael Malm from Sweden's Municipalities and Regions (SKR) stresses the urgency of addressing the treatment needs of these individuals, as they often require immediate care. This situation reflects a significant increase in cases where criminals, found to have serious mental health issues, are released while awaiting a spot in the necessary treatment facilities. Previously, the number of similar cases, referred to as 'frifotingar', was negligible, typical of just a handful of individuals, but it has now escalated.
