Celebrating a Queer Lunar New Year: 'If Sexual Minorities are Happy, Everyone is Happy'
A Korean LGBTQ+ advocacy group launched a campaign highlighting the struggles of sexual minorities during traditional family gatherings around Lunar New Year.
The Korean Lunar New Year is often a challenging time for sexual minorities, as family gatherings can lead to uncomfortable inquiries about marriage and relationships. As individuals increasingly face pressure to conform to societal norms, the Korea Sexual Minority Rights Collective Rainbow Action initiated a campaign titled 'If Sexual Minorities are Happy, Everyone is Happy' to help alleviate some of this stress. Despite the campaign being launched in 2023, the experiences and challenges faced by queer individuals remain largely unchanged, emphasizing the ongoing need for support and understanding during this traditionally familial time.
Through the campaign, Rainbow Action conducted surveys to compile experiences of the community, highlighting statements such as 'Let's stop these conversations!' from LGBTQ+ individuals who often cringe at the comments made by family members. One participant expressed the distress of being subjected to prayers filled with homophobic sentiments during family gatherings, while another individual recounted the challenges of fearing the necessity to engage with family members who may harbor anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments. These responses underline the emotional turmoil faced by sexual minorities during times that are otherwise celebrated as joyous.
The campaign aims to provide queer individuals with ways to navigate these familial pressures better while sharing stories from participants who have opted to travel or spend time with other LGBTQ+ friends during the holiday. While many have found solace in creating their own communities and support systems, the overarching message of the need for acceptance and understanding remains crucial, particularly during traditional celebrations like Lunar New Year that can amplify feelings of isolation for sexual minorities.
