European Parliament President Roberta Metsola is set to visit Lithuania on February 16th to participate in the country's independence day celebrations alongside President Gitanas Nausėda. The events will take place in Simon Daukantas Square and will be followed by a visit to the Vilnius Archcathedral Basilica for a mass. This visit highlights Latvia's strategic ties to both EU leadership and national sovereignty commemorations.
Additionally, Metsola will engage in a working lunch with President Nausėda and hold discussions with key Lithuanian political figures, including the Speaker of the Seimas, Juozas Olekas, and Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene. The agenda for these meetings will touch upon crucial topics such as the security of NATO’s eastern flank, countering hybrid threats, support for Ukraine, and Lithuania’s upcoming presidency of the EU Council in the first half of the next year, emphasizing regional security cooperation.
Meanwhile, Portugal's Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will also be in Lithuania, plans to meet with his Lithuanian counterpart Kęstutis Budrys. Their discussions are expected to focus on enhancing security and deterrence among NATO's frontline states, as well as the challenges posed by instrumentalized migration. Both visits underscore the importance of international cooperation in light of current geopolitical dynamics, particularly in Southeast Europe.
