Poland's President: The State Should Consider Developing Its Nuclear Potential

In an interview, Poland's President discussed the need for the country to explore the development of nuclear capabilities, amid concerns about regional security due to aggressive Russian actions.

In a recent interview with "Polsat News," Poland's President Navrockis emphasized the urgency for Poland to consider developing its nuclear potential, reflecting the increasing security concerns due to its proximity to armed conflict, notably with an aggressive Russia. While he admitted he was uncertain how to proceed without violating the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, he underscored the importance of initiating steps that may allow Poland to join nuclear projects in the future.

Navrockis pointed out that Poland is located close to a region affected by military hostilities, affirming the known aggressive stance of an imperialistically minded Russia towards Poland. This context of heightened security threats has prompted European nations to discuss the need for independent nuclear deterrence capabilities, as reported earlier by Bloomberg. Currently, the only countries in Western Europe that possess nuclear weapons are France and the United Kingdom, highlighting a significant gap in deterrence capabilities among the rest of Europe.

Furthermore, according to Bloomberg's sources, French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to propose the expansion of nuclear deterrence across Europe soon, a possibility he had raised the previous year. Simultaneously, several other European nations, including Latvia, have publicly expressed interest in participating in discussions about establishing a common nuclear deterrence mechanism in Europe. This collective interest reflects a growing recognition of the need for strategic security measures within the region, especially given the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
