Government intervenes the Segura EP facilities in Guayaquil: the Police take control
The Ecuadorian government has intervened in the Segura EP facilities, placing them under police control due to concerns over data management and security.
On Sunday night, February 15, the Ecuadorian Minister of the Interior, John Reimberg, alongside police officials, took control of the Segura EP facilities in Guayaquil. This intervention is part of an effort to ensure that the logistical resources and systems of the municipal entity are properly utilized for the cityβs security infrastructure, now coordinated by the Interior Ministry and the National Police. Previously, there were concerns regarding the storage of critical information, which had been managed by a private entity rather than within the municipal frameworks as agreed upon.
Segura EP is a municipal entity responsible for security and associated logistics in Guayaquil, and the decision to intervene came after it was highlighted that Segura had failed to comply with ministerial agreements regarding information storage. Minister Reimberg specifically pointed out that control over information, including live footage from security cameras, was improperly held by a private company. This situation underscored a significant security breach in managing the cityβs safety data, which has raised alarms given the backdrop of ongoing investigations into suspicious fires occurring in the region.
The intervention by the government not only signifies a response to operational lapses within Segura EP but also aims to address the rising concerns regarding safety in Guayaquil. Minister Reimberg remarked that recent incidents, including three substantial fires, warrant further investigation, suggesting a deeper issue of safety and security in the area. This governmental action will likely reflect broader themes of municipal accountability and the effective management of security resources in urban settings.
