Kanazawa University has launched a demonstration research project in Noto, Japan, focusing on creating a self-sufficient 'off-grid village' as a sustainable model for areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake. This project, named the 'Future Knowledge MITSUKE Project', aims to establish a community that relies on innovative technologies instead of traditional infrastructure such as electricity and water supply. The initiative is based in a coastal area near Mitsuke Island, where approximately 2,800 square meters of land has been designated for the project. The goal is to create a resilient community capable of surviving disasters by ensuring self-generated water and electricity supply.
The project incorporates advanced methods for providing water, including desalination of seawater and treatment of well and rainwater to make it suitable for drinking. Power needs will be met through solar panels, mini wind turbines, and various types of fuel cells for energy storage. There are also plans to utilize microorganisms for wastewater treatment and to leverage existing agricultural lands to achieve food self-sufficiency. The project aims not only to develop technology-based solutions but also to foster a new community around these initiatives, integrating innovative practices like hydroponics and land-based aquaculture.
The impetus for this initiative stems from the recent earthquake, prompting local residents and Kanazawa University to collaborate quickly and effectively. Many involved in the project, including project leader Yoshimitsu Masu from the university's Noto Satoyama Satoumi Future Creation Center, have personal connections to the region and a desire to contribute. With this project, Kanazawa University hopes to merge modern technology with traditional lifestyles in Noto to create new opportunities for local inhabitants, ultimately working towards a sustainable and resilient future for the community.
