David Nalbandian Returns to Professional Circuit: He Will Be the Coach of Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov
Former Argentine tennis star David Nalbandian will take on the role of coach for Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov, confirmed officially by Dimitrov's representative.
David Nalbandian, who previously reached a career-high rank of number three in the ATP rankings, has been appointed as the new coach for Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov. This information has been confirmed by Dimitrov's representative Georgi Stoimenov and will see Nalbandian join Dimitrov's team at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, scheduled for February 23-28 in Mexico. Alongside Nalbandian, the coaching team includes Belgian Xavier Malisse, as well as physiotherapist Mark Bender and physical trainer Yutaka Nakamura.
Nalbandian is recognized as one of the prominent figures in Argentine tennis, having enjoyed a successful playing career before his retirement in 2013. After stepping away from professional play, Nalbandian briefly explored rally racing before returning to the sport in a coaching capacity, with his initial role being with Serbian player Miomir Kecmanović. His re-entry into the coaching circuit marks a significant moment, as he has been away from the professional tennis environment for an extended period of time, suggesting he is eager to impact a player's career actively once more.
Grigor Dimitrov, a former top-ranked player himself, having once held the world number three spot, will benefit from Nalbandian's extensive experience in the sport. The collaboration aims to reinvigorate Dimitrov's performance and competitive edge on the ATP tour, which could have broader implications for both players in their respective careers. For Nalbandian, this position represents an opportunity to establish himself as a prominent coach in tennis, particularly in the competitive ATP environment, as he reunites with the sport after years of absence as a player.
