Osun PDP NASS, state lawmakers reject caretaker committee, back Adeleke
Osun State lawmakers from the PDP have publicly rejected the caretaker committee led by Tunde Tijani and expressed their support for Governor Adeleke ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Members of the National Assembly and the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disowned the caretaker committee led by Tunde Tijani. In a communique issued in Osogbo, they reaffirmed their commitment to the party's structure and leadership, explicitly stating that any alternative leadership not endorsed by the duly elected National and State Assembly caucus should not be considered legitimate. This statement indicates a significant division within the party, with the lawmakers siding firmly with the Governor Ademola Adeleke administration.
In support of Governor Adeleke, the lawmakers praised his efforts in improving the living standards of Osun residents and pledged their full backing for his re-election in the upcoming 2026 governorship elections. By aligning themselves with Adeleke, the lawmakers are attempting to consolidate power and influence within the party, creating a substantial challenge for any opposing factions, particularly the caretaker committee they have rejected. The importance of unity and a clear leadership structure is emphasized as critical ahead of the elections.
Additionally, this development comes against the backdrop of recent defections of five federal lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP lawmakers view these defections as a destabilizing factor but have positioned themselves to maintain loyalty to Adeleke and the official party leadership, which may be crucial for the party’s performance in the upcoming elections. This scenario illustrates the ongoing political maneuvering within Osun State's PDP and sets the stage for a competitive electoral landscape in the next governorship race.
