Kõiv on the biathletes' Olympics: these are not the places we came here to achieve

Kauri Kõiv, the sports director of the Estonian Biathlon Union, expressed disappointment with the team's performance at the Milano Cortina Olympics, citing difficult conditions and the need for improvement.

Kauri Kõiv, the sports director of the Estonian Biathlon Union, has publicly stated his discontent with the performance of Estonia's biathletes at the ongoing Milano Cortina Olympics. In an interview with ERR, he emphasized that the outcomes have not met their expectations and acknowledged that the current head coach, Haavard Bogetveit, has shown interest in continuing his role despite the team's struggles. Despite some improvements, such as Susan Külm's rise in rank during the pursuit race, the overall sentiment surrounding the team's performance remains grim.

The challenges encountered by the Estonian team can be attributed to the high altitude of nearly 1700 meters and the dry snow conditions, which overwhelm the athletes' performances according to Kõiv. The dry and slow snow affects the speed and adaptability of the racers, hindering their ability to compete effectively at the Olympic level. Tracks, while not particularly difficult in profile, become significantly challenging due to the prevailing weather conditions.

While Kõiv expressed optimism regarding the maintenance team's efforts, he admits uncertainty regarding the reasons for the team's poor performance at the Games. The focus is on exploring potential solutions and adapting strategies to enhance their results moving forward. As the biathlon events continue, the team aims to capitalize on any improvements and regain some competitive footing as the Olympics progress.
