Washington holds both sides of the conflict in Sudan responsible for the deterioration

The U.S. holds both parties in the Sudan conflict accountable for worsening conditions, emphasizing the unprecedented flow of arms and the humanitarian crisis.

The U.S. has officially condemned both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for their roles in the deteriorating situation in Sudan. Masad Bulus, an advisor to the U.S. President on Africa, has indicated that they maintain communication with both sides, although engaging with the RSF leader poses challenges. He emphasized that such dialogues are crucial yet complicated, highlighting the tense environment in which the negotiations occur.

Bulus pointed out a significant issue contributing to the crisis: the unprecedented influx of weapons into both factions. This surge in armaments has exacerbated the conflict, leading to escalating violence and deepening the humanitarian disaster. He noted that the current humanitarian situation in Sudan is perhaps the gravest in the world, reflecting a catastrophic level of suffering and displacement.

The U.S. administration’s stance calls for accountability and a reconceptualization of how external parties deal with the conflict's stakeholders. By highlighting the balance of responsibility between the two factions, Washington aims to increase pressure on both sides to de-escalate and reconsider their strategies, potentially influencing international response to the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
