DMI warns of drifting snow in Jutland, Funen, and Bornholm on Monday

Denmark's Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a warning for drifting snow in Jutland, Funen, and Bornholm due to a front bringing snow from the North Sea on Monday.

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a warning regarding drifting snow across Jutland, Funen, and Bornholm, effective for the duration of Monday. This forecast indicates that a front bringing snow from the North Sea will affect these areas, potentially resulting in an additional three to eight centimeters of snowfall. As the day progresses, wind conditions are also expected to worsen, blowing steadily from the southeast at moderate to strong speeds, which can lead to significant drifting of the snow, complicating travel.

The criteria for snow drifting is the presence of at least ten centimeters of loose snow combined with average wind speeds exceeding ten meters per second. According to DMI’s categorization, this warning falls under extreme weather conditions, suggesting serious disruptions could occur. The institute notes potential rapid closures of vulnerable roads, the formation of snowdrifts, reduced visibility, and a risk of halting public transport services as the scenario develops throughout the day.

While the DMI emphasizes that it is very likely to be windy, they also caution that uncertainty remains regarding how compact the snow on the ground has become, thus affecting the likelihood of drifting snow. Vagtchef Hans Pet comments that, while windy conditions are certain, some places may have compacted snow, making it less probable that significant drifting will occur. The situation will be monitored closely as the day progresses, particularly with regard to mobility and public safety.
