Proposal to establish a financial crime investigation attaché position at the Lithuanian embassy in the Netherlands

The Lithuanian government plans to create a financial crime investigation attaché at its embassy in the Netherlands to enhance cooperation with Europol.

Lithuania's Ministry of the Interior has proposed the establishment of a financial crime investigation attaché position at the Lithuanian embassy in the Netherlands. If approved by the government, this new position will be added to the list of roles within the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT), which will also be responsible for selecting candidates for the role. It is expected to be funded by the FNTT's budget from 2026 to 2028.

The Ministry aims to improve cooperation with Europol in preventing, investigating, and exposing criminal activities related to the state's financial system. There has been a notable increase in international financial crime in recent years, with sophisticated schemes of tax evasion, fraud, money laundering, and the legalization of funds obtained through criminal means often crossing multiple jurisdictions. This growing trend highlights the need for more coordinated efforts to tackle such crimes.

The VRM emphasizes that the increasing organization and international nature of financial crimes complicates rapid detection and response efforts. The new attaché's role will be crucial in addressing these complex crimes, fostering better communication among international entities involved in combating financial fraud, and enhancing the overall security and integrity of Lithuania's financial systems.
