Portugal experienced one of the worst series of severe weather events in decades, culminating in a critical situation for many residents. The country narrowly avoided a dramatic evacuation of the historical university city of Coimbra, where local authorities decided against relocating 9000 residents who were at risk after the Mondego River overflowed its banks. Nevertheless, over 3000 people had to be evacuated from various affected areas as the storms continued to wreak havoc on infrastructure.
