Latvian President: Moscow does not respect its agreements and I am not optimistic about the future of relations with it

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs expresses skepticism about Russia's commitment to international agreements while advocating for a unified European stance toward Moscow.

In a recent interview with Al Jazeera during the final day of the Munich Security Conference, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that Russia is failing to uphold its promises and international agreements. He voiced his doubts about the future of Russia's foreign policy towards Europe over the next five to ten years, emphasizing the need for a cohesive European position against Moscow's actions. Rinkēvičs argued that the ongoing war in Ukraine significantly affects the security dynamics of the Baltic States and asserted that a stable and independent Ukraine remains in Latvia's best interest. The President highlighted the strategic necessity of NATO's presence in the Baltic region, citing historical precedents where Moscow has not honored its commitments, such as the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 and agreements related to Ukraine's sovereignty. He responded to concerns over Russia's reliability by pointing to the Minsk agreements as further evidence of Russia's fragile obligations, reinforcing the necessity for a clear and consistent deterrent policy within the European Union. Moreover, Rinkēvičs noted a growing European consensus on implementing policies that include the imposition of additional sanctions against Russia. He underscored the importance of collective European action in response to Moscow's disregard for international law and its implications for regional security, reflecting a broader commitment to maintaining stability in Europe as tensions with Russia continue to escalate.
