"Belaruskalij" initiated arbitration against Lithuania - another 0.5 million euros for legal services

The Lithuanian government approved funding of €537,800 for legal services in an arbitration case against the Belarusian company Belaruskalij.

The Lithuanian government has approved an additional allocation of €537,800 for legal services in the ongoing arbitration case with Belaruskalij, a state-owned Belarusian potash fertilizer producer. The funds will go to the Ministry of Transport, which is representing Lithuania in the lawsuit. This decision aligns with previous government actions aimed at covering legal expenses incurred in international arbitration, highlighting the financial implications of the case for Lithuania.

The additional funding comes amid increasing legal costs associated with the arbitration, which has already seen more than €1 million allocated to legal fees by the Lithuanian government. The current arbitration case, initiated by Belaruskalij, involves a claim for damages estimated at around €12 billion, stemming from the actions taken by Lithuania since February 2022, following geopolitical tensions and sanctions related to Belarus. The case illustrates the complexities and financial burdens of international legal disputes.

Moreover, the allocation also includes €287,400 for an arbitration dispute with a Swiss company indirectly controlled by businessman Igorio Udovickis, which is involved in cargo operations in the port of Klaipeda. This also emphasizes Lithuania's proactive approach in managing its legal challenges against foreign entities, which can have significant implications for its economic and regional stability.
