Minister Rantanen in Iraq
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen is currently visiting Iraq to strengthen bilateral relations on internal security and promote collaboration on repatriation issues.
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen of Finland is making an official visit to Iraq, where she will meet with prominent leaders including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari. The purpose of this visit is to enhance the bilateral relations between Finland and Iraq, particularly in the realm of internal security and to advance cooperative efforts regarding the return of individuals to their home countries.
During her visit, Rantanen emphasized the importance of Iraq as a key partner for Finland and the European Union, particularly in the fight against terrorism. She highlighted that Finland supports international efforts against terrorism, which includes participation in the international coalition against ISIS. Rantanen believes that reinforcing counter-terrorism measures in Iraq will also contribute to the security of Finland, showcasing the interconnectedness of international security issues.
Moreover, Rantanen addressed the need for effective repatriation cooperation and Iraq’s assistance to Finland in combating illegal immigration. She pointed out the significance of having a functional asylum and residence permit system, ensuring that individuals with negative asylum decisions can be returned to their home countries.
