"Tsunami" at Kymi Beach
Residents of Kymi Beach are experiencing severe flooding due to storms, with the sea intruding into homes and businesses for the fourth time this year.
On February 15, residents of Kymi Beach are enduring their fourth experience of flooding this year as strong southerly winds have brought the sea ashore, flooding not only streets but also homes and shops. The main road in the village is filled with stones, making it impassable for vehicles and pedestrians, who are at risk of being swept away by huge waves. Significant damage has occurred along the coastal front, particularly from the port onwards, affecting roads, houses, and businesses, with access severely restricted.
Residents indicate that this flooding issue is longstanding, typically occurring whenever strong southerly winds blow. Today, the winds are notably intense, worsening the situation for the already affected community. Despite numerous protests and appeal to local authorities over the years, both the former prefecture and the current regional administration seem to neglect the issue, leaving the local municipality with the limited task of clearing the roads of debris without addressing the underlying problem.
The recurring nature of this flooding not only affects daily life but poses risks to safety and property. The lack of effective response from authorities has led to growing frustration among residents, who feel helpless in trying to protect their homes and businesses from these predictable yet damaging environmental events. The ongoing erosion of the coastal area and neglect from officials highlights a significant gap in disaster preparedness and infrastructure development necessary to safeguard these vulnerable communities.
