Police in Prague Responded to a Reported Radioactive Object and Found It
Authorities in Prague investigated a reported radioactive item at Charles University but found no issues at the nuclear reactor, though elevated radiation levels were detected at another unidentified object nearby.
On Saturday evening, an anonymous tip was reported regarding the presence of radioactive material at Charles University located on V Holešovičkách Street in Prague, particularly near the university's training nuclear reactor VR-1, operated by the Czech Technical University. First responders included the local fire department, which measured radiation levels at the premises of the training reactor and found them to be within safe limits, confirming that the reactor area was secure and posed no danger.
However, further investigation revealed that higher radiation levels were detected nearby, where a foreign object, not belonging to the university, was found. The fire department's spokesperson, Miroslav Řezáč, announced that additional analysis was conducted by a Chemical Laboratory from Kamenice, which corroborated the initial findings of elevated radioactivity at the unidentified object.
This incident raises concerns about safety protocols and monitoring of potentially hazardous materials in educational institutions, especially those dealing with nuclear technology. As investigations continue, it becomes imperative for relevant authorities to ensure that such occurrences are addressed promptly to safeguard public health and prevent panic over potential radiation exposure.
