"Get off the couch and help, not just talk." Volunteers manufacture trench candles and camouflage nets for Ukraine
Volunteers in Prague are producing long-burning candles and camouflage nets to support Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.
In a workshop located in Holešovice, Prague, around a hundred volunteers gathered on Tuesday evening to assist in the production of special long-burning candles intended for use in Ukraine. These gatherings occur three times a week and serve as a way for scouts and the public to come together in support of the ongoing crisis. The candles, described as small heaters, are made from cardboard and wax contained in metal cans, allowing them to burn for extended periods of time, providing heat and light during power outages.
The candles are designed to burn for 6 to 7 hours, which is enough time to heat a small room or cook food during electricity shortages. The initiative, coordinated by local scouts, emphasizes the ecological aspect of these candles as they are produced using waste materials. The volunteers rely on donations from the public and companies for materials such as metal cans, cardboard boxes, and leftover candle wax, highlighting a community effort to contribute positively to the war-affected areas.
The Holešovice workshop has transformed into a central hub for these humanitarian efforts, resembling a large factory where volunteers engage in meaningful work. This kind of grassroots support is crucial for those impacted by the war, and it showcases how local communities can mobilize in times of need. By creating useful supplies from recyclable materials, these volunteers not only provide practical assistance but also promote sustainability within their support efforts for Ukraine.
