Norwegian skier has had enough – Changing nationality
Fredrik Fodstad, a 25-year-old cross-country skier from Norway, has decided to change his nationality to represent Colombia in international competitions after struggling to achieve success in Norwegian championships.
Fredrik Fodstad, a 25-year-old cross-country skier, has announced his decision to represent Colombia after feeling dissatisfied with his performance in Norwegian junior championships. Despite being born in Bogotá, Colombia, he was adopted by a Norwegian family and grew up in Eidsvoll, Norway, where he started skiing at the age of three. His lack of notable results in Norway motivated him in 2021 to contact the Colombian Ski Federation to explore the possibility of switching national teams.
Fodstad's journey reflects the intersection of identity and sports, as he has no memories of Colombia due to his early adoption but retains a connection through his place of birth. His interest in skiing, nurtured by his father who is an avid skier, propelled him into the sport from a young age. As he prepares for his new role in Colombia’s team, Fodstad's participation marks a significant step for the country, which historically has not had representation in cross-country skiing at the Olympic level.
His upcoming role at the Olympic Games will include support from his family, with his grandfather, known as Pappa Fodstad, assisting him during the events. The Colombian delegation will be small, comprising Fodstad, one coach, and two officials, underscoring the challenges faced by athletes from countries with less established winter sports traditions. Fodstad's decision to switch nationalities not only highlights personal ambition but also hints at broader discussions about representation and identity in sports.
