Floods: The Garonne under red alert at least until Monday

The Garonne River remains under a red alert due to flooding, impacting the Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne departments as heavy rainfall is forecasted.

The Garonne River has been placed under a red alert for flooding through Sunday and Monday in the French departments of Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne. Vigicrues, the national flood monitoring agency, has declared a state of 'generalized flooding' across France due to anticipated heavy rains that could further elevate water levels in reactive watercourses. A new weather disturbance is expected to enter the country from Brittany and will likely affect a significant portion of the nation.

In addition to the red alert for the Garonne, nine other departments are currently under an orange alert for flooding, including Eure-et-Loir, Ille-et-Vilaine, and Loire-Atlantique. Vigicrues has warned of significant and major overflow expected in the next 24 hours for rivers under orange or red vigilance. This situation is alarming as it follows recent consistent heavy rains that have already saturated the ground and watercourses.

Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to remain cautious, particularly those living near rivers and tributaries. The continued rainfall, combined with previous conditions, raises concerns over potential flooding impacts on infrastructure, transportation, and residential areas. The situation remains fluid, and updates are expected as weather conditions develop over the coming days.
