PRF studies the construction of a new post on BR-040, in Serra de Petrópolis
The Federal Highway Police in Brazil is considering building a new operational unit on BR-040 to enhance road safety and policing in the region.
The Federal Highway Police (PRF) conducted a series of technical visits in Rio de Janeiro to evaluate ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing road safety. One of the primary focuses was on BR-040 in the Serra de Petrópolis region, where officials assessed the feasibility of constructing a new Operational Unit (UOP) at kilometer 89. This initiative is seen as crucial for boosting police presence in one of the most significant and heavily trafficked sections of the state's road network.
Negotiations to advance this project have already commenced, with support from the concessionaire Elovias, which manages the highway. This step is particularly necessary following the demolition of the previous PRF post in 2015, which occurred during the halted construction of the New Serra Ascent that was suspended in 2016. The lack of a permanent oversight structure since then has led to notable declines in safety and an increase in criminal activity along this vital corridor.
The proposed operational unit aims to restore the law enforcement presence that the area has been missing for several years, which is essential for ensuring the safety of road users and preventing crime. The PRF's initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving road conditions and safety measures in regions identified as critical hot spots within the state's infrastructure, showcasing a proactive approach to public safety and law enforcement on highways.
