Broadcast Authority: Trump's Attack on Herzog Reduces Chances of Pardon for Netanyahu
Israeli public broadcaster reports that Donald Trump's criticism of Isaac Herzog may decrease the likelihood of a presidential pardon for Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli public broadcaster revealed that Donald Trump's recent criticism of Israeli President Isaac Herzog may diminish the chances for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to receive a presidential pardon. Trump, after his meeting with Netanyahu in Washington, expressed his disapproval of Herzog, stating that Herzog should be ashamed for not granting a pardon to Netanyahu, who is facing trial on charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust.
Israeli President Herzog responded by reaffirming that the issue of a pardon is under review and that it would be discussed without any internal or external pressures. Previously, Trump had made verbal and written requests to Herzog to consider pardoning Netanyahu, who is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes; however, Trump's tone has shifted to one of public attack on Herzog this time.
According to the broadcaster, Trump has made supportive statements for Netanyahu's pardon twice since Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington. Trump's accusation that Herzog refrains from granting the pardon out of fear of losing his influence aligns closely with the narrative promoted by Netanyahu and his associates. The broadcaster suggested that Trump's recent comments reflect a growing urgency to offer public support for Netanyahu amidst his legal battles, impacting the dynamics of Israeli leadership and U.S.-Israel relations.
