"The world has changed".. Chair of the European Parliament Defense Committee calls for a unified army
The Chair of the European Parliament Defense Committee, Marie Agnès Strack Zimmermann, calls for the establishment of a unified military force in Europe amid increasing calls for defense independence.
In light of rising calls within Europe for enhanced defense independence, Marie Agnès Strack Zimmermann, Chair of the European Parliament Defense Committee, has declared that Europe is ready to elevate its military readiness, albeit acknowledging that it is still at the beginning of this journey. During an interview with Al Jazeera at the Munich Security Conference, she admitted that last year did not reflect the necessary readiness, but emphasized that the situation has now changed. The 27 EU member states are reportedly on the 'right track,' balancing the need for increased defense spending with the interests and social needs of their citizens.
Responding to concerns that accelerating militarization in Europe, particularly in Germany, might lead to a repeat of historical experiences that resulted in two world wars, Zimmermann asserted that Europe currently enjoys 'good levels of peace.' She reminded viewers that Europe is part of NATO and maintains strong relations with the United States. These relationships have fostered a sense of security within the continent, providing a necessary context for the discussions on military readiness and cohesion.
However, Zimmermann also recognized that Washington has been urging Europeans for at least a decade to take more responsibility for their own defense. This acknowledgment underscores the complexities of transatlantic defense relations and the ongoing debate about European military autonomy, especially in light of external threats that have prompted a reassessment of security strategies in the region.
