Ecuador must pay $215 million to Chevron, five million less than expected

Ecuador has been ordered to pay $215 million to Chevron Corporation after an arbitration tribunal corrected a previous damages assessment.

Ecuador has been mandated to pay $215 million to American oil company Chevron Corporation following a correction made by the Arbitration Tribunal in the damages assessment originally issued on November 17, 2025. The General Prosecutor's Office (PGE) announced on February 12, 2026, that the amount of the compensation was reduced by $5.7 million after a request for correction from the state's legal defense was considered favorably by the tribunal.

Originally, the total compensation was assessed at $220.8 million, but the tribunal, agreeing with the state's correction request, recalculated the final amount on February 5, 2026. This revised total includes both principal and pre-award interests amounting to $215,073,244.43. The adjustment reflects a slight decrease of $5,733,697.51 in the total compensation due to the favorable ruling for Ecuador's defense against the initial high assessment of damages.

The international arbitration was initiated by Chevron Corporation along with Texaco Petroleum Company in a case cataloged as PCA 2009-23. The recent correction was made during Phase III of the arbitration process, which pertains specifically to the quantification of damages, showcasing the complexities and ongoing legal battles associated with international oil disputes in Ecuador.
