Request for the intervention of the Foreign Ministry in the case of the Argentine lawyer detained in Brazil for racist gestures
The Argentine Public Bar Association has requested the intervention of the Foreign Ministry regarding lawyer Agostina Páez, who is detained in Brazil on accusations of making racist gestures.
The Public Bar Association of the Federal Capital has reached out to the Argentine Foreign Ministry concerning the case of Agostina Páez, an Argentine lawyer currently under preventive detention in Rio de Janeiro. Páez is accused of making racist gestures towards employees at a restaurant, and the association is calling on the foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, to officially intervene in her case to ensure that her rights as an Argentine citizen are fully protected.
Ricardo Gil Lavedra, the president of the Public Bar Association, highlighted the perceived disproportionality of the restrictions and preventive measures imposed on Páez, such as being monitored with an electronic ankle bracelet. He expressed concern about the potential implications for her legal process, suggesting that it should be possible for her to continue with her case and eventually return to Argentina without undue punitive measures.
The situation has garnered attention not only due to the allegations against Páez but also because it raises questions about the treatment of Argentine citizens abroad. The historical stance of Argentina on citizen rights and protections abroad is being invoked, as previous administrations have upheld these principles strongly. This case may set a precedent regarding how the government will handle similar situations involving its citizens in the future, potentially influencing diplomatic relations with Brazil as well.
