Frederiksena: Trump's Desire for Greenland Has Not Changed
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that U.S. President Donald Trump's desire to acquire Greenland remains unchanged, despite the lack of public mention in recent discussions.
During a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserted that U.S. President Donald Trump's interest in Greenland has not diminished. Although Trump's desire to acquire the autonomous territory from Denmark has not featured prominently in his public rhetoric since the World Economic Forum in Davos, Frederiksen emphasized that the underlying crisis surrounding the issue is still active. She stated, 'I believe the president of the United States still has the same desire; he takes this topic very seriously.'
The discussion included a question from the panel moderator regarding the potential price at which Denmark might consider selling Greenland to the U.S. Frederiksen firmly responded that there would be no price for such a transaction, likening the concept to attempting to assign a price to a part of Spain or the United States itself. She reinforced the importance of protecting sovereign nations and the right of people to self-determination, explicitly noting that the people of Greenland have made it clear they do not wish to become American citizens.
Furthermore, Frederiksen expressed support for an increased NATO presence in Greenland as a means of enhancing the security of the region. Her remarks indicate a commitment to maintaining Greenland’s autonomy and sovereignty while balancing international security interests, highlighting the ongoing geopolitical tensions related to U.S. interest in the Arctic region.
