Airlines Bet on Monitoring Technologies to Avoid Turbulence
Airlines are increasingly adopting monitoring technologies to manage and evade turbulence during flights.
Airlines and industry representatives are increasingly implementing tools to assist in monitoring turbulence. These technologies enable operators to study alternatives, such as rerouting to avoid unstable areas. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports a growing number of airlines adopting the Turbulence Aware platform, launched in 2018, which gathers real-time turbulence data from aircraft operated by participating companies.
Using these insights, the software can generate reports that include flight time, altitude, aircraft position, as well as wind and temperature data. All information is anonymized and shared among program participants, enhancing the collective understanding of turbulence phenomena. According to IATA, in the first half of 2025, participating airlines produced 24.8 million turbulence reports, reflecting a 23% increase compared to the same period last year, indicating a significant rise in engagement with this technology.
This growth highlights the aviation industry's commitment to safety and efficiency, as better management of turbulence can lead to improved passenger comfort and reduced operational disruptions. The continuous development of such monitoring technologies may set new standards in air travel, potentially transforming how airlines approach flight safety in the face of unpredictable weather conditions.
