Winter Cold and Respiratory Infections Worsen Symptoms of Asthma

Many Danes are currently experiencing worsened asthma symptoms due to winter cold and respiratory infections, according to the director of the Danish Asthma and Allergy Association.

As winter temperatures drop, many individuals in Denmark are facing exacerbated asthma symptoms resulting from cold weather combined with respiratory infections. Anne Holm Hansen, director of the Danish Asthma and Allergy Association, highlighted that their counseling services are receiving daily calls from people reporting increased difficulties in breathing, extreme fatigue, and a general decline in their well-being. This surge in cases seems connected to the current climate conditions as well as an elevated level of respiratory infections that are affecting sensitive airways.

Hansen explained that cold air can trigger asthma symptoms by causing the small muscles surrounding the bronchi to contract, leading to narrowed airways. This combination of environmental factors is particularly concerning in Denmark, where it is estimated that around 415,000 people suffer from asthma. The existing high rate of respiratory infections is compounding the issue, as they are known to worsen asthma conditions.

This situation highlights a broader public health concern, as those with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma are particularly vulnerable during periods of extreme weather conditions. In light of these developments, it is essential for both healthcare providers and individuals with asthma to be vigilant and take precautionary measures to manage their conditions effectively during the winter months.
