Record 1,000 UK taxpayers under 30 earned more than £1m last year

A record number of young taxpayers in the UK became millionaires in the last year, with earnings driven by influencers and high-salary professions.

In the UK, the latest data from HMRC reveals that a record 1,000 taxpayers aged under 30 earned over £1 million in the last year, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. This demographic, which now constitutes about 3% of all earners in this income bracket, collectively took home more than £3 billion, averaging £3 million each. This surge challenges the stereotype of young people being work-shy and reflects a changing economic landscape where success is increasingly attainable for young individuals.

The rising number of young millionaires can be attributed to various factors, including the growing influence of social media. Accountancy firm Lubbock Fine noted that income from social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has significantly contributed to this trend, as influencers capitalize on marketing revenues. Furthermore, advancements in high-paying sectors such as technology, finance, sports, and entertainment are providing lucrative opportunities for younger professionals, enabling more individuals to hit the millionaire mark.

Prominent figures such as Erling Haaland, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker, exemplify this shift as sports and entertainment salaries soar. The combination of social media earnings and competitive salaries in various industries indicates a broader economic trend where young people are redefining success at a faster pace than previous generations. As this trend continues, it may have implications for labor markets, consumer behavior, and perceptions of youth culture in the UK.
