Rwanda's Foreign Minister: There is no development without security and no economic integration without stability
Rwanda's Foreign Minister emphasizes the link between security and development during the African Union summit.
During the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Rwanda's Foreign Minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, articulated the country's commitment to the continental agenda, particularly Agenda 2063, which prioritizes security and economic integration. He expressed Rwanda's belief that enhancing economic integration is essential for building a competitive African bloc able to engage with international economies. Nduhungirehe also underscored that collaborative efforts among African nations are critical to achieving successful integration.
The minister pointed out that security is foundational for development, stating that the African continent continues to face various security challenges, which inhibit stability and growth. He called for a proactive approach to conflict prevention rather than merely managing disputes, indicating that addressing the root causes of conflict is crucial for sustainable development. This assertion underlines the necessity for political will and strategic cooperation among African countries.
The 39th session of the African Union summit commenced with participation from various leaders and international officials, including UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres. With the theme centered on security, peace, and integration, the discussions are expected to lay the groundwork for strategies that could significantly impact the region's stability and development trajectories. Nduhungirehe's statements reflect a growing consciousness among African leaders about the interdependence of security and economic advancement as they navigate complex challenges before them.
