Braathen brought Brazil a historic Olympic gold in slalom
Lucas Pinheiro Braathen won Brazil's first-ever medal in the Winter Olympics by securing gold in slalom skiing.
At the Stelvio ski center, Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who recently switched to represent Brazil, made history by winning the country's first medal at the Winter Olympics, and it was a gold medal. After representing Norway until autumn 2023, Braathen completed the slalom event with a winning time of 2:25.00, which included a few minor errors in his second run but still left him with a decisive lead of over a second ahead of his closest competitor, Swiss skier Marco Odermatt.
In the first run, Braathen set the pace as the first skier on the course, giving him an advantage that he maintained through the competition. He ultimately finished 0.58 seconds ahead of Odermatt, who secured the silver medal. The bronze went to fellow Swiss athlete Loic Meillard, who finished 1.17 seconds behind. Notably, Braathen's performance marked a significant achievement not only for him personally but also for Brazilian skiing, showcasing the potential for growth and recognition on the international stage.
The event was also marked by other notable performances, but none could match Braathen's compelling run. Following the podium finishers, competitors like Atle Lie McGrath from Norway and Leo Anguenot from France finished close behind but were unable to challenge for medals. Braathen's journey underscores the increasing competition in winter sports and Brazil's emerging presence in this arena, a significant step for the country in winter athletics.
