Bad weather, state of emergency requested in Calabria: over 500 people evacuated
Severe weather in Calabria has prompted a state of emergency request, with over 500 people evacuated due to flooding and landslides caused by rising water levels in local rivers.
Recent severe weather events have battered Calabria, prompting a request for a national state of emergency due to the extensive damage caused in the region. Over the last two days, more than 2,000 interventions were made across Calabria, Sardegna, and Sicilia, with significant efforts in major urban areas such as Rome. In Fiumicino, fifty families were evacuated due to storm surges affecting their homes, illustrating the widespread impact of the conditions.
In Calabria, the river Crati experienced significant breaches along its entire mouth, leading to widespread flooding in the Corigliano-Rossano area and Cassano allo Ionio municipality. Floodwaters inundated numerous homes, disrupted electricity supply, and caused severe traffic challenges in the affected areas. The local firefighters are actively involved in managing landslides and flooding incidents, reflecting the critical situation on the ground as over 500 individuals have been displaced from their residences.
The regional president, Roberto Occhiuto, swiftly convened an extraordinary council meeting to address the crisis and to formally request national government assistance. This situation highlights both the vulnerability of Calabria to extreme weather events and the immediate need for coordinated emergency response strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected populations in the face of continuing adverse weather conditions.
