Incident in the Port of Rijeka: Tito's Ship Galeb Damaged in Maritime Accident

The ship Galeb, historically used by communist dictator Josip Broz Tito, was damaged in a maritime accident in Rijeka's port when a cargo ship lost propulsion and collided with it, but there were no injuries or marine pollution reported.

The ship Galeb, permanently docked at the Rijeka breakwater, sustained damage during a maritime accident in Rijeka's port when the cargo ship Deniz Akay lost propulsion and struck it while leaving its berth at the De Franceschi wharf. Fortunately, no individuals were injured, nor was there any marine pollution as a result of the incident. The Galeb is a significant vessel, historically associated with Josip Broz Tito, whose restoration and conversion into a museum have encountered substantial financial challenges, exceeding initial estimates.

Following the incident, the Rijeka Port Authority notified all relevant services, and a formal investigation is underway to assess the damage. The Agency for the Investigation of Accidents in Air, Sea, and Rail Traffic is conducting the crash investigation at the accident scene. Maritime accident investigator Slaven Bušić stated that the agency conducts safety investigations independent of any other inquiries to ascertain the causes and circumstances surrounding the accident.

Based on the information gathered so far, the incident is classified as a maritime accident. Investigators will not only evaluate the circumstances that led to the crash but also what precautions were in place to prevent such incidents, given the historical significance of the Galeb and the potential implications for Rijeka's maritime activities and heritage tourism.
