Student expelled from UFPA classroom with 7-month-old baby says she was humiliated: 'I cry every time I remember'

A UFPA student, expelled from class while holding her baby, expressed feelings of humiliation and emotional distress following the incident.

A student from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) reported feeling emotionally humiliated after being removed from class for having her 7-month-old son in her arms. Lorrany da Paixão Maia stated that she entered the classroom in Belém around 2 PM with her baby, who was asleep at the time. The incident occurred as the class was just starting and only a few students were present. A professor confronted her and implied that it was necessary to address the situation without giving clear guidelines on what should be done.

Lorrany recounted that the professor asked whether she had faced such a situation before and suggested waiting for other students to arrive to decide on the course of action. This left Lorrany feeling singled out and embarrassed, particularly since her baby was not crying at that moment, but rather, she was the one who ended up in tears as a result of the incident.

The UFPA has acknowledged the situation, stating that appropriate institutional procedures are being followed regarding the incident. The university is currently trying to reach out to the teacher involved for comments. This situation raises questions about the treatment of student parents in academic settings and the need for more inclusive policies to support those balancing education and childcare.
