Doctors demonstrate at the kick-off of their mobilizations, which include a strike against the preliminary draft of the Statute Framework
Doctors in Spain are organizing a protest and strike against the preliminary draft of the Statute Framework that regulates their working conditions in the National Health System.
Under the motto "For a proper statute for doctors and healthcare professionals," the Strike Committee is rallying against the preliminary draft of the Statute Framework, which is poised to restructure the regulations governing their working conditions within Spain's National Health System. This committee is composed of six national unions representing doctors across Spain: the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM), the Andalusian Medical Union (SMA), the Catalonia Doctors' Association (MC), the Association of Doctors and Higher Graduates of Madrid (Amyts), the Basque Medical Union (SME), and the Independent Medical Union of Galicia (O'Mega).
The march is scheduled to begin at noon from a location just below the Congress of Deputies, making a right turn onto Paseo del Prado before concluding in front of the Ministry of Health. This event marks the first major action from a plan established by the predominant medical unions in Spain to advocate for better working conditions for healthcare professionals. Union representatives and medical professionals from across the country are expected to attend, highlighting the widespread support and urgency surrounding their demands.
As the first step in a campaign that has been in the works since January, this demonstration reflects growing discontent among medical personnel about their working conditions and the current proposals put forth in the Statute Framework. If the unions do not see meaningful changes in response to their concerns, further escalated actions such as ongoing strikes may follow, signaling a significant challenge for the Spanish government as it seeks to maintain healthcare services amidst mounting pressure from its healthcare workforce.
