Customs Exemption on China's Imports from 53 African Countries

China will implement zero tariffs on imports from 53 African countries, effective May 1, as part of its strategy to bolster trade relations and counter Western competition.

According to Chinese state media, starting May 1, China will apply zero customs duties on imports from 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations. This move is part of China's efforts to strengthen its trade ties in Africa, particularly in the face of competition from the United States and Europe. The announcement was made during a recent report on government television, which indicates a shift towards more favorable trade agreements with African nations.

Additionally, China is encouraging negotiations to sign economic partnership agreements and plans to enhance African exports access to the Chinese market through new mechanisms referred to as the 'green channel.' This strategy reflects China's long-term objectives to expand its influence and stabilize economic partnerships across the African continent while supporting the growth of African economies.

In June, China had already expressed its readiness to abolish tariffs for all African nations with diplomatic relations during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in Beijing. Recently, there was also a signing of a trade and investment cooperation agreement between China and South Africa, aimed at facilitating tariff-exempt access for South African exports into the Chinese market, further exemplifying China's commitment to fostering economic ties with the region.
