Kenya: Ruto Departs for Addis Ababa to Attend the AU Summit
Kenya's President William Ruto is heading to Addis Ababa to participate in the AU Summit focused on Agenda 2063 and climate action.
President William Ruto of Kenya is set to participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The summit is convened during a time of global uncertainty and economic transitions, where African leaders will discuss pivotal continental priorities and the implementation of Agenda 2063. Ruto, as the AU Champion for Institutional Reform, will present a progress report aimed at enhancing the Union's effectiveness and financial sustainability.
Apart from presenting his report, Ruto is expected to lead discussions in his role as chair of the Committee of the African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC). This committee's report will advocate for a unified African stance on essential issues such as climate action, resilience, and the need for climate finance, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
Ruto will also chair the inaugural meeting of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) Committee, which reflects Kenya's commitment to advancing regional integration and promoting trade among African nations. Throughout the summit, it is anticipated that Ruto will engage in bilateral discussions with other leaders, enhancing Kenya's diplomatic relations and collaborative efforts on various continental concerns.
