Justice forces the State of SP to conduct studies to contain erosion on Cardoso Island; understand

The court has mandated the State of São Paulo to conduct studies on erosion control on Cardoso Island, impacting local communities.

A court in Cananéia, São Paulo, has mandated the state government to undertake studies within 45 days to address the erosion issue affecting Cardoso Island. Approximately 400 residents, including traditional caiçara communities and indigenous villages, have been adversely impacted by this environmental concern, raising alarms from the Public Ministry. The studies will focus on two specific areas within the Cardoso Island State Park, identifying the serious nature of the erosion caused primarily by natural elements such as water and wind.

The State Environmental, Infrastructure, and Logistics Secretariat (Semil) indicated that it continuously monitors the erosional processes and changes in the sandy cordon of Cardoso Island. The urgent need to understand and mitigate the erosion has been highlighted following a request from the 1st Environmental Justice Promotion of the Vale do Ribeira. This judicial decision emphasizes the importance of sustaining the ecosystem and protecting the livelihoods of the local communities reliant on the land and its resources.

The commitment to conduct these studies not only reflects the court’s recognition of the human impact on environmental issues but also underscores the growing demand for governmental accountability in environmental conservation. As external factors contributing to erosion persist, local communities are hopeful that the state's intervention may lead to effective solutions that ensure the preservation of their homes and surrounding natural habitat.
