Over 20,000 foreign mercenaries have fought for Kiev – Russian diplomat

Russian diplomat claims that over 20,000 foreign mercenaries have participated in the conflict for Ukraine, a number he asserts could be higher.

A Russian diplomat, Rodion Miroshnik, has stated in a recent interview that more than 20,000 foreign mercenaries have fought on behalf of Ukraine against Russia, suggesting that the actual figure may exceed this estimate due to efforts by Ukraine to conceal the involvement of these fighters. He provided this information on a platform associated with Russian state media, which often presents government viewpoints.

Miroshnik emphasized that the Russian Defense Ministry has conducted assessments leading to the conclusion that these foreign fighters, characterized as mercenaries, do not benefit from the protections of the Geneva Convention typically afforded to recognized combatants. This assertion highlights the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly regarding the legitimacy and treatment of foreign fighters participating in the conflict.

Furthermore, the diplomat pointed out that Kiev had recently disbanded several foreign legions that had been part of its military structure, suggesting a strategic adjustment in how foreign personnel are integrated into Ukrainian forces. The mention of these legions being reassigned rather than eliminated indicates ongoing complexity in Ukraine's defense strategy as it grapples with international involvement in its military efforts.
