Child with 'burnt' heart, hospital's opinion: 'No longer transplantable'
A two-year-old boy previously needing a heart transplant due to a medical error is now classified as non-transplantable by the hospital.
A two-year-old boy, who was mistakenly given a 'burnt' heart transplant, has had his hope for further operation extinguished according to the Bambino Gesรน hospital in Rome. Legal representative Francesco Petruzzi announced on the TV show 'Mi manda Raitre' that the child, who is currently being treated at the Monaldi hospital in Naples, is no longer considered suitable for transplant. Previously, he was placed at the top of the transplant list due to a medical mishap that drew significant media attention.
Presently, the child remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Monaldi, relying on an ECMO machine for support. His clinical status has remained stable over the past two days; however, there are worrying signs of deteriorating liver function, indicating insufficient oxygenation. Medical staff and family members are understandably concerned as the potential for recovery seems increasingly bleak, particularly after the recent determination of non-transplantability.
The case has raised significant national concerns regarding healthcare quality and procedural safeguards in Italy's medical system. With government officials, including the health minister, acknowledging the severity of the situation, discussions around medical malpractice and the transparency of treatment protocols are expected to intensify as the family navigates through their grief and the complexities of such a tragic outcome.
