Damage Compensation Lawsuit for Atami Mudslide: Judges Inspect Disaster Site
Judges from the Shizuoka District Court inspected disaster sites in Atami as part of a damage compensation lawsuit following a mudslide that occurred in July 2021.
In July 2021, a mudslide in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, caused significant destruction and loss of life, leading victims and the bereaved families to file a damage compensation lawsuit against landowners and local government entities. On the 13th, judges from the Shizuoka District Court's Numazu branch conducted a site inspection in a procedure known as 'local proceedings', which allows judges to observe the damage firsthand. The inspection involved three judges, including presiding judge Eiko Maeda, along with plaintiffs, defendants, and their representatives, totaling around 20 people, who examined both the origin of the mudslide and the affected residential areas.
