AR Rahman Accused of Song Theft, Hearing Held in the Supreme Court

Music composer A.R. Rahman faces accusations of song theft from classical vocalist Ustad Faiz Ali Faizuddin Dagar, with a petition filed in the Supreme Court.

Music composer A.R. Rahman is embroiled in controversy once again, this time facing accusations of song theft from Ustad Faiz Ali Faizuddin Dagar. Dagar has claimed that Rahman plagiarized a portion of his family's old composition 'Shiv Stuti' in the song 'Veera Raja Veera' from the Tamil film 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', which was released in 2023 and has been well received by audiences. Dagar's allegations do not extend to the entirety of the Dhrupad style of singing but focus specifically on the use of a particular 'Sool Taal' rhythm that is unique to his family's tradition, while it is traditionally sung in 'Chautal,' a meter created by the poet Amir Khusro nearly 800 years ago.
