Heavy rainfall around the south-east but Brisbane escapes major downpours
While Brisbane has largely avoided significant rainfall, surrounding regions have experienced heavy downpours and flooding.
The weather forecast for Brisbane predicted high rainfall totals, but the city managed to evade the worst of the downpours as heavy rain fell on areas to the north and south. The Border Ranges recorded more than 200mm of rain over two days, prompting multiple flood rescues, particularly in the Fraser Coast region. The southern and northern outskirts of Brisbane bore the brunt of the storm, indicating a skew in precipitation distribution.
Despite the good fortune for Brisbane, the regional forecast still calls for ongoing adverse weather with lighter, patchy showers expected today and isolated rainfall totals of up to 50mm for tomorrow. The weather bureau has warned that residents of south-east Queensland should prepare for cool and damp conditions around Valentine's Day, as temperatures could plunge to 10 degrees below average due to the continuing wet weather.
Senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy noted that Hervey Bay and areas to the north witnessed substantial rainfall, suggesting that while Brisbane escaped major problems, the peripheral areas are facing challenges that could lead to further safety concerns. As the weather eases next week, communities affected by the floods will likely begin assessing damage and recovery needs as they confront the implications of heavy rainfall in the region.
