Kerttu Niskanen got her way – the coach's unusual answer to Jasmi Joensuu's reaction

Finland has announced its team for the women's 4 x 7.5 km relay at Val di Fiemme, with a notable change involving Krista Pärmäkoski being replaced by Vilma Ryytty after her strong performance in the freestyle.

In the lead-up to the women's 4 x 7.5 km relay at Val di Fiemme, Finland has confirmed its competition lineup, which comprises Johanna Matintalo, Kerttu Niskanen, Vilma Ryytty, and Jasmi Joensuu. Vilma Ryytty's inclusion is particularly significant as she had replaced experienced skier Krista Pärmäkoski, who is now heading home after being dropped from the team despite her past performances. Ryytty earned her place by being the top performing Finn in the recent 10 km freestyle event, marking her first time competing in a championship relay.

Head coach Reijo Jylhä praised Ryytty's skills during the announcement, highlighting her ability to maintain pace when in a group, which he considers vital against the competition, particularly noting that she will be facing Sweden's Frida Karlsson during her leg of the race. Jylhä emphasized the need for strategic racing in his instructions to Ryytty, advising her to avoid taking any unnecessary leads during the relay.

While the team compositions were largely expected, there was considerable discussion surrounding the racing order in which the skiers would compete. Both Niskanen and Joensuu have expressed a preference for classic skiing, indicating that the selection may not only impact the team’s immediate performance but could also reflect broader strategies heading into future events. The reactions and adjustments within the team dynamics continually shape Finland's competitive edge in international skiing events.
