The end of the dream of a medal. Czech hockey players were not enough against the Swedes
Czech women’s hockey team fails to secure a medal at the Olympics, losing 0-2 to Sweden in the quarterfinals.
The Czech women’s hockey team faced disappointing defeat in the quarterfinals of the Milan Olympics, losing 0-2 against Sweden. Despite being a favored team, the Czechs struggled significantly with their shooting, failing to score despite 28 attempts. This defeat marks their third consecutive loss to the Swedish team, highlighting an ongoing challenge for the Czech players against this particular opponent.
The winning goal for Sweden came from Hanna Olsson during a power play situation at 24:47 into the match, with Hilda Svensson sealing the victory just 25 seconds before the final buzzer by scoring into an empty net during a power play. Swedish goalkeeper Ebba Svensson Träff successfully kept a clean sheet, demonstrating her top performance during the tournament. The overall performance of the Czech team brought back memories of their 7th place finish in Beijing four years prior, as they aim to improve upon this in the case of favored teams USA and Canada advancing.
Czech coach Carly MacLeod's team had high hopes following their bronze medal wins in world championships in 2022 and 2023, building on their strong start in Group A. However, their aspirations for a medal at this Olympic event were cut short by Sweden, who emerged from a weaker Group B without any losses, now aiming to improve on their previous Olympics performance where they finished 8th. With hopes for a third Olympic medal since their bronze in Salt Lake City 2002 and silver in 2006, Sweden now takes a strong step forward in their quest for Olympic success.
