Gay couple stabbed on Consolação Street, central region of São Paulo, with suspected homophobic motivation

A gay couple was stabbed in São Paulo, leading to concerns over a potential homophobic attack.

A shocking incident occurred in the central region of São Paulo, where a gay couple, a 28-year-old doctor and a 27-year-old lawyer, was stabbed on Consolação Street near the Higienópolis-Mackenzie metro station. This violent attack, suspected to be motivated by homophobia, involved two or three assailants who approached the couple as they walked down the sidewalk. The violence left the doctor with serious injuries, including a punctured lung, while the lawyer sustained injuries on his head and neck.

The police report indicates that the couple was attacked without provocation, highlighting the random nature of the violence they faced. When law enforcement arrived, the doctor was barely conscious, underscoring the severity of his condition. Both victims were promptly taken to Hospital das Clínicas; the doctor was admitted to the ICU and remained there until he was stable enough to be transferred to a regular room, while the lawyer received treatment for his less severe injuries and was discharged soon after.

This incident has raised alarms within the LGBTQ+ community about ongoing violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation in Brazil. The couple has chosen to remain anonymous due to fear of further victimization, reflecting a wider atmosphere of fear among LGBTQ+ individuals in the country. Advocacy groups are expected to respond to this incident, calling for enhanced protections and awareness to prevent future attacks of this nature.
