Man arrested on suspicion of pushing ex-wife from overpass in downtown São Paulo
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting femicide by pushing his ex-wife from an overpass in São Paulo.
A suspect was arrested in São Paulo on Friday morning after allegedly pushing his ex-wife from the Jaceguai overpass in the Bela Vista neighborhood. The act, which is being treated as an attempted femicide, occurred over the busy 23 de Maio Avenue, a critical thoroughfare in the city's center. Following the incident, the suspect fled, prompting local police to initiate a search. He was later apprehended on Brigadeiro Luís Antônio Avenue, near a boarding house where he lives, although his identity remains undisclosed as reporters were unable to contact his legal representation.
The victim was rescued by the Fire Department and transported to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia hospital, although no information regarding her health status was released. The case has been forwarded to the 1st Women’s Police Station (DDM) for further investigation. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in Brazil, particularly in São Paulo, where reports of femicide have reportedly increased by 8.1% in 2025, marking a record high since data collection began in 2018.
